Time For Games Is over Herb L. Peters (October 5, 2006) - It had to be frustrating. No matter what Jesus said or did, Israel's leaders just wouldn't listen. Some said He was demon possessed. Others said He was a sinner. But, regarding one thing they all were sure; Jesus wasn't who He said He was. It's that way today. The only difference is, instead of it being Israel's political/religious leaders, this time it's the world's political/religious leaders. You see, Israel had their prophets to warn them about God's coming judgment (Ezekiel 2:1-10, 3:1-4). In the same way, today, the world has us Christians to warn them about God's coming judgment (Revelation 10:1-11). Something Jesus said has always managed to defy my understanding. This morning I may have finally gotten it. In the book of Matthew Jesus says:

Matthew 11:16-19
But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

I believe what Jesus was saying is, no matter what approach that God used, Israel's political/religious leaders still found fault and wouldn't listen. And, He compared them to children who preferred living in their make-believe world than to learning the truth. Isn't it still that way today? Friends, when we seek to become relevant to this adulterous and wicked generation, we become irrelevant in the hand of God. While we are busy having our imaginary tea parties, the real world is swiftly sliding toward judgment and Armageddon. Here's what I'm saying: No matter how we Christians interpret the prophetic Scriptures, on this one thing we should all agree -- God's judgment is soon coming. And, if God didn't withhold His rod from His own people Israel, He won't withhold it from us. The time for games is over.

Israeli company discovers oil at drilling site near Dead Sea (October 5, 2006) - An Israeli company has discovered a small amount of oil at a drilling site near the Dead Sea, raising hopes that the Jewish state could one day join its regional neighbors as a petroleum producer. Initial tests have found that the site would yield between 100 to 150 barrels daily, said Eli Tannenbaum, geologist for the Ginko oil exploration company. While this is minuscule by global standards - No. 1 producer Saudi Arabia produces 9 million barrels a day - Tannenbaum said there are signs that larger amounts of crude are nearby. (AP)

Yom Kippur in Moscow: 80 Jewish Tombstones Smashed (October 4, 2006) - This Yom Kippur saw swastikas and 80 smashed tombstones as the result of the defiling of a Jewish cemetery by anonymous persons in the town of Tver, close to Moscow. The local police opened an investigation following the appalling incident, although the local Jewish community found it hard to believe that the offenders would be caught. Chaim Ben Yaakov, Head of the Jewish Agency Delegation in Moscow, said that recent weeks have seen an incline in anti-Semitic acts. “Last weekend, windows were smashed at the Jewish Agency in Vladimir, also close to Moscow,” Ben Yaakov said. Yaakov also spoke of an anti-Semitic flier being circulated throughout the city, adorned in swastikas and caricatures of Jews. The flier proclaims things like “Russia is for Russians” and “Russia must take its fate into its own hands”. “I don’t know if the increase in incidents is a coincidence, but it may also be due to the holidays,” Ben Yaakov speculated. The Russian government condemned and denounced anti-Semitic acts, although Tver’s Jewish community doubted that real efforts were being made to catch the offenders. “The Russian government is not anti-Semitic. The authorities denounce these incidents and claim they will do everything they can to fight them, but in the meantime, they haven’t caught any of the culprits in any of the cases,” Ben Yaakov said. The Jewish community in Tver, comprised of about 4,000 of the town’s residents, was very fearful of more anti-Semitic acts. Ben Yaakov explained that there was a fear of incidents occurring in places that had Jewish activities, such as the community center that contained a synagogue. “We, as the Jewish Agency, will increase security in those places and help in any possible way,” Ben Yaakov concluded. more...

This kind of incident just shows the increased anti-Semitism in Russia and elsewhere around the world. Anti-Semitism is Satanic and has been the calling card of those who are against the God of Israel since Israel was set apart as a nation. When you see hatred of Jews, look closer at the groups and you will see the undercurrent of hatred, malice, jealousy, spite, murder, and strife. Galatians 5:19-21 goes over some of the fruits of the flesh and Galatians 5:22-26 go over the fruits of the Spirit. Look at anti-Semitism, or anything for that matter, and see whether it is of the world or of God.

Waiting for the Imam's Return to Earth (October 3, 2006) - The followers of Moqtada al-Sadr believe that the US invaded Iraq to prevent the return to Earth of their sect’s messiah-like figure, the Mahdi, or 12th Imam. Hojatoleslam al-Sadr claims that his militia is preparing for the day when the Mahdi, the last direct descendent of the revered Shia figure Ali, reappears. Shia believe that the Mahdi, who disappeared in 868, will bring justice to Earth. At a prayer service in the central Iraqi city of Kufa on September 15, the cleric told a crowd of thousands that the Americans were collecting a dossier on the Mahdi to prevent his return. “Did you ever ask yourself about why all of this, the bloodshed and the prisons? Why are the brothers fighting each other for a political game planned by the Americans? This all happened because they (the Americans) are waiting for the Mahdi. This planning started ten years ago. They have a big file for Imam Mahdi and they just need his picture to complete it.” more...

EU heading for single UN seat, UN official says (October 3, 2006) - The UN's deputy secretary general believes the European Commission will in future represent the EU in the United Nations as the voice of the European bloc worldwide. "I think it will go in stages," Mark Malloch Brown told EUobserver on Monday (2 October). He explained that the European Commission already has an observer seat on the executive board for funds and programmes, where the commission is a big donor. "We are going to see a growing spread of that and then steady formalisation of it institution by institution, probably starting in the UNDP or UNICEF [development aid units] first," Mr Malloch Brown said. "It is not going to happen with a flash and a bang," he added, but said he hoped that "it will happen as quickly as possible." The main obstacles to such a move, explained Mr Malloch Brown, could be that sovereign [UN] member states are wary of the rise of international institutions seeking to become a layer between them and another international institution. more...

Assad gives Israel 6 months for peace negotiations (October 3, 2006) - Syrian President Bashar Assad continued to give clashing messages to the international community with an announcement that he was ready to negotiate with Israel. In an interview with Spanish newspaper El-Pais on Saturday, the president said it would take six months to reach an agreement with Israel. If a peace agreement would not be reached, he added, war would break out. "Two sides are responsible for the current situation (with Israel) - not just one side. The situation is based on one topic only, the peace process… and perhaps war if no peace is established," Assad said. The president said that Syria's vision has so far proven itself, as opposed to the failed Israeli dream that is based on military power. "We have a clear vision, and events have proven that we foresee the future in the right direction. It is not based on the ideas of strength and weakness, but rather it is based upon values, history and human ambition, while the Israeli dream, unfortunately, is based solely on a strong army." more...

He's just stated here that war is inevitable based on Israel cooperating with a six-month deadline. I believe they're preparing for war now based on their actions, which actually are about as loud and effective as their words about it. They spew hatred and anti-Semitism and the world takes the Palestinian side. Truly the mystery of iniquity is already at work in this world.

This WEEK in the European Union (September 29, 2006) - This week justice ministers will gather in Luxembourg with the extension of the EU's borderless "Schengen" zone set to be a hot topic. The issue has become politically charged with member states from the east, where the Schengen area does not yet apply, believing the reasons for delay are political rather than technical. The commission indicated it would do some tough talking with US president George W. Bush at a bilateral summit earlier this year, but did not produce the results, with new member states feeling hard done by at what they see as a lack of solidarity. Meanwhile, at the beginning of the week, defence ministers will meet informally in Finland to debate the European Defence Agency, the EU's fledgling battle groups and the bloc's peace-keeping mission in Congo. One issue of interest will be Zagreb's reaction to recent comments by European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso that there will have to be a new EU treaty before the EU can further expand will be of interest. So far, it has played down the comments. The same committee will hear EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Thursday amid rumours that he will not complete his term of office but retire earlier than 2009. more...

This just goes to show that we won't truly know who the antichrist is until he reveals himself. We can speculate all day, but if Solana retires, it would create a huge power vacuum that could be filled suddenly by whoever the antichrist will be. The Bible says we won't be gathered to Christ in the harpazo until after the apostasy (falling away from faith) and the man of sin is revealed. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 Speculation can only go so far and it may be way off. That's why in watching we must be careful not to cling to those things we can't prove because they sound like they fit. Perhaps Solana won't retire, but the world will beg him to stay. This would give him a big head and perhaps that is the seed planted that brings him to consider himself God? Or maybe someone altogether different will fill his shoes. Regardless, I don't think we can ignore the EU and the system Solana heads right now because whoever the man of sin is, the EU looks like the political tool that will bring forth the antichrist in the future.

Christian leaders show support for Israel (September 27, 2006) - Fifty Christian politicians from Europe, South America, Asia and Africa will join with Members of Knesset from the entire political spectrum to declare their solidarity with the Jewish State and her leadership. KCAC issued a statement saying “In light of Israel’s recent war against Hizbullah, this international delegation of members of parliament, senators and ministers finds it especially important to support Israeli leadership in this forum. This event serves as an opportunity for Members of Knesset and Christian parliamentarians from around the world to break bread together, renew their spiritual ties and strengthen the common values and heritage that bind them together. “Leaders from both faiths will discuss ways in which Christians and Jews can together face the ominous challenge of radical Islam and extremism in the 21st century,” the organization said. The Knesset Christian Allies Caucus of the Israeli Parliament, established in 2004, serves as a multi-partisan caucus made up of 12 MKs from the entire political spectrum. Beijing secretly fires lasers to disable US satellites (September 26, 2006) - China has secretly fired powerful laser weapons designed to disable American spy satellites by "blinding" their sensitive surveillance devices, it was reported yesterday. The hitherto unreported attacks have been kept secret by the Bush administration for fear that it would damage attempts to co-opt China in diplomatic offensives against North Korea and Iran. Sources told the military affairs publication Defense News that there had been a fierce internal battle within Washington over whether to make the attacks public. In the end, the Pentagon's annual assessment of the growing Chinese military build-up barely mentioned the threat. "After a contentious debate, the White House directed the Pentagon to limit its concern to one line," Defense News said. The document said that China could blind American satellites with a ground-based laser firing a beam of light to prevent spy photography as they pass over China. According to senior American officials: "China not only has the capability, but has exercised it." We Will Not Recognize Israel: Hamas PM (October 6, 2006) - Prime minister Ismail Haniya has said that his Hamas movement would not recognize Israel but would accept a long-term truce in exchange for an independent Palestinian state with the 1967 borders. "We will not recognize Israel, we will not recognize Israel, we will not recognize Israel," Haniya thundered in a speech before tens of thousands of Hamas supporters rallying in support of his embattled Palestinian government on Friday. "We are for the creation of a Palestinian state on the territories occupied (by Israel) in 1967 with Jerusalem as its capital in exchange for a truce but not recognition of Israel, which would amount to renouncing the land of our ancestors," he added. He also rejected the "diktats" imposed by the four international sponsors of the Middle East peace process. Scientists teleport two different objects (October 5, 2006) - Beaming people in "Star Trek" fashion is still in the realms of science fiction, but physicists in Denmark have teleported information from light to matter bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality. Until now scientists have teleported similar objects such as light or single atoms over short distances from one spot to another in a split second. But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter. "It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects. One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium," Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday. The experiment involved for the first time a macroscopic atomic object containing thousands of billions of atoms. They also teleported the information a distance of half a meter but believe it can be extended further. Iran: Sanctions won't derail enrichment (October 5, 2006) - The U.S., Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia will confer Friday in London to assess Iran's defiant refusal to suspend uranium enrichment. They are expected to refer the nuclear case to the U.N. Security Council for talks next week on possible sanctions, diplomats said Thursday. Russia's foreign minister, however, said he believes it is too soon to impose sanctions on Iran and that further efforts are needed to push Tehran to negotiate. To avoid alienating the Russians and the Chinese, any sanctions are likely to be relatively mild, including embargoes on missile and nuclear technology, and possible travel bans and other penalties on Iranian officials involved in their country's nuclear program. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated Thursday his country would not be frightened by threats to impose sanctions. "Those who threaten Iran by sanctions and embargo should know that this nation lived under the hardest situation in the past 27 years and achieved nuclear technology. 'Gaza readying for war' (October 2, 2006) - Hamas has succeeded in smuggling "hundreds of tons" of weapons from Egypt into the Gaza Strip and is preparing for the possibility of launching a large-scale conflict with Israel, according to a report by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party. The report, drafted by Fatah's General Security Services and obtained by WND, stated Hamas has smuggled from the Egyptian Sinai desert between several hundred and 1,300 tons of advanced rockets; anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles; rocket propelled grenades; raw explosives; rifles; ammunition; and other heavy weaponry. Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip last year. In a deal brokered in November by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Egypt-Gaza border, once controlled by the Jewish state, now is manned by Egyptian and Palestinian security officials and is observed by European monitors. The monitors reportedly have fled their duty several times the past few months. Israeli security officials have noted multiple breaches in border security, including the transport of terrorists and weapons across the border. Fatal shooting at US Amish school (October 2, 2006) - A gunman has shot dead three girls and injured eight others before killing himself in an attack on an Amish school in the US state of Pennsylvania. The gunman entered the class and ordered all the boys and some adults to leave. He then tied up the girls and began shooting them in the head. Police named the killer as 32-year-old truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV. He is not Amish himself. The attack is the third shooting at a US school in the past week. In the latest shooting, the gunman was said to be heavily armed and seemed prepared for a long siege. He lined up the girls in front of the blackboard, tying their feet using wire or plastic cuffs. "It appears that when he began shooting these victims, the victims were shot execution style in the head," said Pennsylvania police commissioner Col Jeffrey Miller. The attack happened at a one-room school for Amish children aged six to 13 in the village of Paradise near Nickel Mines in Lancaster County. more...

Syria Threat Over Golan Puts Israel On War Alert (October 1, 2006) - Israel has gone on heightened alert over a possible war with Syria amid reports that President Bashar Assad may be considering military strikes to regain the Golan Heights. For years Israeli military intelligence has down-played Syria's capacity to launch a meaningful attack against Israel, and the threat level has been kept "low". But Israeli reports have revealed that the threat level had been raised after intelligence assessments that Damascus is "seriously examining" military action. The raised threat level comes as Israel prepares for Monday's Day of Atonement, known as Yom Kippur, a solemn Jewish holiday when the entire country effectively shuts down as residents fast and seek forgiveness for sins. It was on Yom Kippur in 1973 that Israel was caught by surprise as Syrian and Egyptian forces launched a joint attack and inflicted heavy losses before being repelled. I could see good reason for a pre-emptive attack by Israel against Syria. The Bible talks about Damascus being made a ruinous heap. Isaiah 17 However, Damascus is one of the longest constantly inhabited cities in history. It has never been destroyed. Damascus houses some of the highest leaders on the Israeli hit-list who are currently planning their next move against Israel. If Israel senses this and strikes, Syria has a defense agreement with Iran that would bring them against Israel like hooks in the jaws. Russia has clearly made ties with Iran and many Russian missiles were found exploded in this last barrage. Both Russia and Turkey are currently planning on placing "peacekeeping" troops in Southern Lebanon on the Northern border of Israel. This is not far from Jerusalem. With all the weapons cache bunkers in Southern Lebanon, even "peacekeeping" troops can grab a gun. Israel is asking for Turkish troops and Ezekiel 38,39 names Turkey, Russia, and Iran (Persia), along with others who will attack Israel. I think the alliances are clearly already there and now the troops that we may soon see decimated on the mountains of Israel are being planned for Southern Lebanon. This means that all this could happen before the year is out, which would fit perfectly with the EU's plan for the seven year covenant with Israel to begin January 1, 2007. It has a mid-term review (3 1/2 years for those who know prophecy). The Bible says that when these forces are wiped out with fire and brimstone from heaven in the mountains of Israel, that the world will know the God of Israel is who He says He is. Perhaps that is how Israel is allowed to cohabitate on the Temple Mount with the Muslims, fulfilling Revelation 11:1,2. This would mean the rebuilding of the Jewish temple, without the outer court. This is the very temple that the antichrist will declare himself God in soon after. And when he does, the final 1290 days begin. After 30 days, God's wrath will be poured out in seven successive trumpet judgments and then seven bowls, each signifying an event of great disaster on the earth. But for those in Christ, we are not appointed to God's wrath. They are watching for His return with oil in their lamps. They are removed from the earth in the harpazo before God's wrath is poured out. These things are all written about in the Bible for those who believe because we are no longer His servants but His friends, John 15:12-15 and He tells His friends what He will do. Solar flares will disrupt GPS in 2011 (September 29, 2006) - Navigation, power and communications systems that rely on GPS satellite navigation will be disrupted by violent solar activity in 2011, research shows. A study reveals Global Positioning System receivers to be unexpectedly vulnerable to bursts of radio noise produced by solar flares, created by explosions in the Sun's atmosphere. When solar activity peaks in 2011 and 2012, it could cause widespread disruption to aircraft navigation and emergency location systems that rely heavily on satellite navigation data. Particularly intense solar activity occurs roughly every 11 years due to cyclic changes to the Sun's magnetic field – a peak period known as the solar maximum. Stem Cell Experts Seek Licence to Create Human-Rabbit Embryo (October 6, 2006) - British scientists are seeking approval to create embryos by fusing human cells with animal eggs in controversial research which will boost stem cell science and tackle some of the most debilitating and untreatable neurological diseases. Three teams in London, Edinburgh and Newcastle are to submit simultaneous applications to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority this month, requesting licences to create early-stage "chimeric" embryos that will be 99.9% human and 0.1% rabbit or cow. The HFEA has sought legal advice and encouraged the applications. The licences will allow scientists to remove the nuclei from animal eggs and replace them with human cells, leading to embryos containing the complete set of human genes, plus dozens of animal genes that sit inside tiny energy-making structures called mitochondria. Two of the groups, led by Stephen Minger at King's College, London, and Ian Wilmut, the Edinburgh University scientist whose team created Dolly the Sheep, plan to use the embryos to create stem cells that carry the genetic defects responsible for neurological conditions such as motor neurone disease. Teeth Improve Memory (October 6, 2006) - Dentists, psychologists and neurologists in Stockholm and Umeå in Sweden and Tromsø in northern Norway, are cooperating on the Betula Project, a study of age, memory, senility and health. The Betula Project has been going on for nearly 20 years in Sweden, and has Center of Excellence status. A study of around 2,000 persons in Umeå revealed a clear tendency that those who kept a full set of teeth had better powers of memory than those who lost teeth. "We have tested the problem from every angle and reached the same result," said Professor Jan Bergdahl at the Institute for Clinical Odontology at the University of Tromsø. Bergdahl is both a dentist and psychologist and works closely with the research centers in Umeå and Stockholm. Their conclusion that older persons with their own teeth have better memory that those without is now going to international publication. Researchers in Japan achieved similar findings on tests with mice and monkeys, with mice learning to find food in labyrinths but forgetting this knowledge when their teeth were pulled. "We know that own teeth are important for elderly health. Chewing brings oxygen-rich blood to the head and one chews better and harder with one's own teeth," Bergdahl said. more...

Giant Electromagnetic 'Launch Ring' Possible: U.S. Air Force (October 3, 2006) - A large circular metal track could accelerate objects to supersonic speed using electromagnets and spit them out into space, says a report from the U.S. air force's Office of Scientific research. Tagged as the Launch Ring by its inventing company, Launch Point Technologies, the track would be several kilometers in diameter. Similar to trains that hover on electromagnetic tracks, a sled would hover over the ring and be propelled forward using powerful magnets. According to the company, a satellite protected by an eggshell-like capsule could sit atop the sled and slowly accelerate over a matter of hours to a supersonic 10 km/sec. Then a small explosion could detach the capsule from the sled and it would hurtle into a side tunnel. From there, it would shoot up a ramp and through the atmosphere into outer space. Maine Quake Causes Dramatic Drop in Well Water Level (October 3, 2006) - A minor earthquake that shook parts of Maine at 8:07 p.m. local time Monday caused water to drop 2.5 feet at a U.S. Geological Survey monitoring well. Nearly 17 hours later, the water level was still dropping, scientists announced today. Hydrologists call the change in the well “dramatic,” and said well-water users might notice changes in their drinking water. The preliminary magnitude 3.9 earthquake was the third such event to shake the state in the past few weeks. It was centered about 4 miles south-southeast of Bar Harbor, or 45 miles southeast of Bangor. A magnitude 2.5 earthquake on Sept .28 and a magnitude 3.4 on Sept. 22 were centered in the same location. “It isn’t unusual for earthquakes to cause minor changes in water levels in wells, but this is the most memorable in Maine in the last decade,” said USGS hydrologist Gregory Stewart. “Users of well water could notice cloudy water and possibly a change in availability of water.” more...

6.7 Quake Near Samoa Generates Small Tsunami (September 28, 2006) - A massive earthquake struck Thursday under the Pacific Ocean floor near Samoa generating a tsunami that could have been destructive if it had been closer to land, authorities said. No damage was reported. U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake as having a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 and striking 27 miles beneath the sea floor about 185 miles southwest of Pago Pago at about 7:20 p.m. local time. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the temblor as magnitude 7 and recorded an 3-inch rise in sea levels near the epicenter. "Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated," the center said in a bulletin posted on the Internet. "It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter." more...

Without the collider, the United States would lose its lead position in high-energy physics discoveries to Europe, where a new accelerator seven times more powerful than the Tevatron is to start up within two years at a site on the Swiss-French border. The meson finding shows that Fermilab, which began operations in 1967, is still capable of making breakthrough discoveries. Scientists there discovered two of the most fundamental particles, the bottom quark in 1977 and in 1995 the top quark, one of the constituent particles of protons, which form the nuclei of atoms. Russian Troops Make First Mideast Foray in Lebanon for Centuries (September 27, 2006) - Russian troops are to deploy in Lebanon soon for the first time in more than 200 years, with a small contingent being sent to build bridges -- not only real ones but also geopolitical ones. As a member of the Middle East diplomatic "quartet", Moscow is grouped with Washington, the European Union and United Nations in so far futile efforts to advance a roadmap to an Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement.

Russia, which criticised the Israeli offensive in Lebanon, is now preparing a tentative foray into the turbulent region. It is due to fly 100 soldiers to Beirut airport on October 4 to take part in post-war reconstruction, its embassy said. The remainder of the 300-strong contingent is to land by sea around October 10 at Jiyeh, south of the capital, near six bridges to be repaired in the Sidon region, spokesman Vladimir Cherepanov told AFP. Earthquake Rocks Koryak Causing Power Blackout (October 6, 2006) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 points on the Richter scale occurred in the Koryak Autonomous Area on Wednesday evening, nobody has been hurt, the Kamchatka branch of the geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN) told Itar-Tass on Thursday. The quake epicentre was located some 30-40 kilometres northwest of the Tilichiki settlement of the Olyutorsky district of the area at a depth of 1.7 kilometres. According to the press service of the Koryak administration, two boiler houses, a diesel power station and two transformer substations came to a standstill in the Tilichiki and Korf settlements, which left without electricity supply the local musical school, central district hospital in Tilichiki and apartment blocks in three streets. Heating and electric power supply has been for the most part restored at present. Governor of the Koryak autonomy Oleg Kozhemyako urgently flew to the area to control the situation. The autonomy’s Olyutorsky district was stricken by a strong earthquake measuring 7.9 points on the Richter scale on April 21. The Tilichiki and Korf settlements were the worst hit, their life support systems were broken and houses damaged. The systems have been restored, but recurrent earth tremors there are possible during another year. The Duma (legislature) of the autonomy will consider in the short run the issue of the closure of these settlements as they are located in the seismic and tsunami dangerous zone. Local residents have already supported liquidation of the settlements and scientists arrived at the conclusion that Korf and Tilichiki are unfit for dwelling.

High-Risk Warning for Mt. Ruapehu (October 5, 2006) - The Department of Conservation has issued a high risk warning for the crater basin at Mt. Ruapehu, following a possible small eruption there on Wednesday night. A series of small earthquakes at the Crater Lake broke a cable at the lake centre, generating a call-out to a lahar response team. DoC's community relations officer for Tongariro-Taupo, Dave Wakelin, says the warning was issued on Thursday morning, in case more volcanic activity follows. He says a team of scientists is en route to the mountain to try to ascertain what affect the earthquakes had on the lake. DoC says it is unclear whether there was a lahar; but if there was, it was a very small one. The lahar team was stood down half an hour after the call-out. 1ST REPORTED QUAKES SINCE 1995 The call-out was triggered by a series of small volcanic earthquakes - the first reported since 1995, when the Crater Lake was displaced. Previous call-outs were due to storms, an avalanche, and melting snow. Brad Scott, from the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Science (GNS) at Wairakei, told Morning Report that the quakes measured about magnitude 3.

Eastern Venezuela Shakes to 6.1 Richter Scale Earthquake (October 1, 2006) - Venezuela's earthquake watch organization (Funvisis) president, Gustavo Malave says last Friday's tremor was felt on the eastern coast of Venezuela and in Caracas, specifically in Chacao municipality. "The fault that caused the earthquake of 1997 is known as the Pilar Fault and according to experts analyzing the earthquake, we thought that a fault occurred in the sea, parallel to Pilar between Paria Peninsula and Araya and extending east towards Trinidad and Tobago." Malave says that after analyzing this event and knowing the depth is 44 km., experts feel that this tremor is related to a cut below the Caribbean Plate that gives origin to the Lesser Antilles and every time there is a movement of the plate importance seismic movements take place. Meanwhile, Civil Protection (PC) director, Colonel Antonio Rivero has ordered a full investigation to discover whether there was any material or human damage recorded in the eastern region of the country, where the tremor was felt 6.1. Water Out of Thick Air (October 1, 2006) - In a country like the United States, the human body's most urgent need is taken for granted. It comes easily out of our faucets, and gallon jugs of it cost less than a dollar. Until something like a hurricane makes clean drinking water hard to find. But the Southeast's climate provides something besides hurricanes in summer. Humidity. As emergency officials ponder how to better help their residents after disasters, some companies are pushing machines that pull the humidity from the air and turn it into drinking water. A few are also touting the machines as a potential solution to the clean water shortages that plague the Third World, pushing aside concerns that the machines are inefficient and require fuel that also might be scarce. The biggest machines can make up to 5,000 liters of water a day, enough to provide about a gallon to 1,250 people. Small units cost several hundred dollars, while the biggest, most elaborate cost half a million. Anyone who's ever looked at an air conditioner or put a cold bottle of water in the sun and watched water bead up on it knows air can be condensed into water when it's cooled. The only questions are how efficient it is on a large scale, and whether it's clean enough to drink. A few companies are marketing portable condensers they say can make clean, drinkable water out of nothing but the air outside. At least one is marketing it as a tool for emergency responders. more...
