Credit where credit is due, the historical aspect of this chapter in
the book of Daniel was researched and put together by
Eschatology in the Prophecies of Daniel website, more specifically,
their
study on Daniel 11. Unlike some of the other studies, I will be inserting
the historical response to the different verses in-line to prevent repeating
too much. I would also like to thank Ryszard Ewiak for his input on the
history. It’s absolutely amazing how accurate the Bible is in prophecy.
We should expect the future end to happen just as scripture says. This prophecy
was given in the third year of Cyrus. Daniel 10:1
I’ve excerpted Daniel 11-12 below without verses as it was
originally. If you would like to read it with verse numbers and inline Hebrew
definitions, read it at Blue Letter Bible. I am not an historian and the
references of historical events will likely be from a mix of
Wikipedia
and other sources I will reference. On certain things I do not trust Wikipedia
to be accurate, but when it comes to secular history, I’m a little
more willing to accept the information presented. If there are any errors
in the histories presented here, please
let me know.
Esther to Antiochus
Daniel 11 Also I in the first
year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen
him. And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up
yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they
all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against
the realm of Grecia.
“The three Persian kings after Cyrus (539-529 BC) were Cambyses (529-522 BC)
who was the son of Cyrus, Gaumata (522 BC), and Darius I Hystaspes
(522-486 BC). Xerxes I Ahasuerus (486-465 BC) was the fourth Persian
king after Cyrus, who lived an opulent life style, married a Jewess
named Esther, and attempted to conquer Greece in 480 BC. Subsequent
Persian kings after Xerxes I included Artaxerxes I Longimanus (465-424
BC) who was the son of Xerxes I, Xerxes II (424 BC), Darius II Nothius
(423-404 BC), Artaxerxes II Mnemon (404-358 BC), Artaxerxes III
Ochus (358-338 BC), Arses (338-336 BC), and Darius III Codomanus
(336-331 BC).”
[Alexander the Great (336-323 BC)]
And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion,
and do according to his will. And when he shall stand up, his kingdom
shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven;
and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled:
for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
“Alexander the Great (336-323 BC) at the age of 20, assumed command of the
Grecian army, swept through Assyria, Babylon, Persia, and Egypt,
as the first king of the Grecians. In 332 BC, he conquered Palestine,
showing great consideration to the Jews. With Alexander’s
premature death in 323 BC, the Grecian Empire was broken into four
separate divisions under the control of four former generals who
became kings sixteen years later, after considerable political wrangling
and the murder of all of Alexander’s heirs. Known as the Diadochi,
the four Grecian division heads were:
Cassander (355–297 BC) - ruled over Macedonia
and Greece
Lysimachus (360–281 BC) - ruled over Thrace
and Asia Minor
Seleucus I Nicator (311-280 BC) - ruled
over Syria
Ptolemy I Soter (323-285 BC) - ruled over
Libya, Ethiopia, Egypt and Palestine”
[Ptolemy I Soter (323-285 BC)] And
the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he
shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be
a great dominion.
“Ptolemy I ruled over Egypt and the land of Israel for 38 years and Seleucus
I ruled over Babylonia, adding extensive territories both east and
west. Ultimately, Seleucus I united three of the four kingdoms under
his control as king of the North.”
And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the
king’s daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north
to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm;
neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and
they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened
her in these times.
“Ptolemy Ceraunus, younger brother of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-246 BC),
killed Seleucus I. Antiochus I Soter (280-261 BC) succeeded his
father Seleucus I and was succeeded by his son Antiochus II Theos
(261-246 BC). Berenice II, daughter of the king of Egypt, Ptolemy
II Philadelphus (285-246 BC), married Antiochus II. Ptolemy II died
and Antiochus II restored Laodice and put away Berenice II. Antiochus
II was then poisoned by Laodice, and placed her son Seleucus II
Callinicus (246-226 BC) on the throne. Afterwards, Seleucus II killed
Berenice and her son at Daphne near Antioch.”
[Ptolemy III Euergetes (246-221 BC)]
But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which
shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king
of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail: And shall
also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with
their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue
more years than the king of the north.
“The death of Berenice resulted in war between Seleucus II Kallinikos “The
king of the north” and Berenice’s brother Ptolemy III
Euergetes “king of the south” (246-221 BC), who became
the king of Egypt after the death of his father. He attacked Syria,
Phoenicia, Cilicia, Babylonia, and Mesopotamia, capturing each.
Ptolemy III overtook Antioch and/or Seleucia, the port of Antioch,
where he recovered 2,500 Egyptian gods and 40,000 talents of silver
which had been carried off to Syria by the Persian king Cambyses,
when he conquered Egypt in 525 BC.”
So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return
into his own land. But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble
a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow,
and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his
fortress.
“Seleucus III Ceraunus (226-223 BC) and Antiochus III Magnus “The king
of the north” (223-187 BC), respectively, succeeded their
father Seleucus II. Ptolemy IV Philopater (221-203 BC) succeeded
Ptolemy III as king of Egypt, and, he was attacked by Antiochus
III, who beat the army of Ptolemy IV near Berytus. Fighting with
an army of 78,000 men, Antiochus III (the Great) took the battle
as far as the fortress of the city of Raphia in southern Palestine.”
[Battle for Raphia in 217 BC] And
the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth
and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set
forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.
And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted
up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened
by it.
“The historian Polybius recorded that during the battle for Raphia in 217
BC, the raging defensive forces of Ptolemy IV, “The king of
the south,” which numbered 75,000 men defeated the attacking
forces of Antiochus III, “The king of the north,” and
killed 10,000 infantrymen. However, subsequently, a force of Egyptians
fought internally against Ptolemy IV who was puffed up with pride
and living in luxury after his victory over Antiochus III. The civil
battles resulted in the death of 60,000 Egyptian citizens.”
[Ptolemy V Epiphanes (203-181 BC)]
For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude
greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years
with a great army and with much riches. And in those times there shall
many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbersH1121,H6530[violent, tyrannical sons] of thy people
shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.
“After the death of Ptolemy IV, he was succeeded by his son Ptolemy V Epiphanes
(203-181 BC), who proceeded to battle with Antiochus III over Syria
and Phoenicia. Jews from the land of Israel joined the forces of
Antiochus III in the battle against Ptolemy V, but were defeated
by the Ptolemaic general Scopas in 200 BC.”
So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the
most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither
his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.
“The next year, Antiochus III defeated general Scopas, capturing the port
city of Sidon, recovering Syria and Phoenicia.”
But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and
none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land,
which by his hand shall be consumed. He shall also set his face to enter
with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus
shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting
her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
“Antiochus III was in command of a very large army, easily conquering the
land of Israel, and obtaining the voluntary loyalty of the Jews
without any resistance. While preparing for war with the Romans,
Antiochus III came to the city of Raphia on the border of Egypt
and made peace with Ptolemy V. In an effort to gain control in Egypt,
Antiochus III offered his daughter Cleopatra I in marriage to Ptolemy
V in 194 BC, however, after the marriage Cleopatra I became loyal
to her husband, who sustained his control over Egypt.”
[Fall of Antiochus III Magnus in 187 BC]
After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many:
but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by
him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon
him. Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but
he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.
“The following year, Antiochus III turned his attention to Asia Minor and
mainland Greece where some Grecian cities were under Roman control.
The fleet of Antiochus III was twice defeated at sea by the Roman
fleet near Phoceia and near Ephesus. Ptolemy V and Cleopatra I then
sent an embassy to Rome to congratulate the Romans on their victory
and to encourage the Romans to press on with the war in Asia. According
to
1 Maccabees 1:10, during the war, Epiphanes, son of Antiochus
III was captured and was taken to Rome as a hostage. Ultimately
defeated in 190 BC by the Roman consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus
in the battle of Magnesia in Asia Minor, Antiochus III retired to
the remainder of his kingdom and was killed three years later by
the Persians, as he was robbing the temple of Jupiter Belus in Elymais,
to raise money to pay the tributes imposed by the Romans.”
1 Maccabees 1:10 And there
came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, son
of Antiochus the king, who had been an hostage at Rome, and he reigned
in
the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the
Greeks.
[Seleucus IV Philopator (187 - 175 BC)]
Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of
the kingdom: but within few daysH3117
he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.
“Antiochus III was succeeded by his son Seleucus IV Philopator (187 - 175
BC). As a tributary of the Romans, Seleucus IV sent his tax collector,
Heliodorus, to rob the temple of Jerusalem to obtain money, however,
Heliodorus engineered a conspiracy against Seleucus IV and killed
him. Shortly before the death of Seleucus IV, he sent his son Demetrius
to Rome in a hostage swap for his brother Antiochus IV Epiphanes
(175-164 BC), who succeeded him.”
[Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-164 BC)]
And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not
give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and
obtain the kingdom by flatteries. And with the arms of a flood shall
they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the
prince of the covenant. And after the league made with him he shall
work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with
a small people.
2 Maccabees 3:1 Now when the
holy city was inhabited with all peace, and the laws were kept very
well, because of the godliness of Onias the high priest, and his
hatred of wickedness,
“According to
2 Maccabees 3:1, Jerusalem was in complete peace under Seleucus
IV who provided kingdom revenues in support of the daily sacrificial
services. After the murder of Seleucus, Heliodorus, treasurer of
the kingdom, assumed interim leadership. Antiochus IV who was in
Athens at the time of his brother’s death, negotiated directly
with the Romans, convincing them to keep Demetrius, rightful heir
to the throne, in Rome as hostage. Through the Romans, as a part
of a private friendship agreement with the king of Pergamus, who
was given a portion of the kingdom of Antiochus III in return for
assisting the Romans, it was determined that Antiochus IV would
become king, in return for annual tribute to the Romans and the
king of Pergamus. The king of Pergamus expelled Heliodorus and placed
Antiochus IV on the throne.
Not the direct heir to the throne,
Antiochus IV distinguished himself, as more of a commoner, by stealing
from the palace treasury, rambling around town in Roman officer
disguise, and drinking and carousing with people of the lowest rank.
Taken for a madman by many in Syria, he deposed Onias the Jewish
high-Priest, and sold the priesthood to Jason, the younger brother
of Onias for 440 talents of silver. Onias
(prince [anointed] of the covenant) was subsequently killed
by Andronicus, deputy to Antiochus IV in Antioch. While Antiochus
IV was away in Egypt, a false rumor spread that he was dead, sending
Judea into revolt. Antiochus IV returned to Jerusalem with his vast
army and indiscriminately killed 80,000 Jews from young to old,
and sold another 40,000 Jews into slavery.”
He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province;
and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’
fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches:
yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even
for a time.
“Antiochus IV exacted tributes from the Palestinian nations, advanced the
Grecian ideals and worship of pagan gods throughout his kingdom,
appointed his cronies to positions of power as tribute collectors,
allowed his friends to plunder the temple wealth, and he set his
sights on capturing all of Egypt. He allowed the position of Jewish
high-Priest to be bought and sold by the highest apostate bidder,
and, according to
2 Maccabees 4:30, he gave the peoples of Tarsus and Mallus to
his mistress, as a gift.”
2 Maccabees 4:30 While those
things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection,
because they were given to the king’s concubine, called Antiochus.
And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the
south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred
up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand:
for they shall forecast devices against him. Yea, they that feed of
the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow:
and many shall fall down slain.
“Upon the death Antiochus’s sister Cleopatra I, the eunech Eulaeus,
personal governor of Cleopatra’s son, claimed Phoenicia and
Coelosyria from Antiochus IV as a dowery for the young boy king.
In 170 BC, Antiochus IV attacked and overtook the Egyptian army
between Pelusium and the mountain Casius. Capable of destroying
the whole Egyptian army, Antiochus IV spared many as a friendly
gesture, and, soon after, he captured all of the Egyptian cities,
which he also befriended. Antiochus IV blamed the war on Eulaeus,
personal governor to Ptolemy VI Philometer (181-146 BC), so as to
make friends with the young boy king.”
And both of these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they
shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the
end shall be at the time appointed.
“Antiochus IV entered into an outward, sycophant uncleship with the young
king Ptolemy VI and let him assist with affairs of the kingdom,
from the Egyptian city of Memphis. Egyptians in the city of Alexandria,
seeing that Ptolemy VI was in the custody of Antiochus IV, declared
Euergetes, younger brother to Ptolemy VI, to be the next king of
Egypt. Pretending to establish Ptolemy VI on the Egyptian throne,
Antiochus IV made war upon Euergetes and beseiged him and Euergetes’s
sister in Alexandria, defeating the Egyptian navy at sea. At the
same time, the Egyptians in Alexandria sent emissaries to Rome to
request assistance.”
Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart
shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return
to his own land.
“Antiochus IV returned to Syria in the spring of 169 BC, leaving Ptolemy VI
to rule from Memphis. During the winter, Ptolemy VI and his brother
Euergetes reconciled and were reunited in Alexandria, where Ptolemy
VI assumed the role of the king of Egypt. While in Judea on the
way to Syria, Antiochus IV directed his captains to make spoil of
the Judean and Jewish wealth, capturing 1,800 talents of gold and
silver, including the gold altar from the temple in Jerusalem, to
be taken to Antioch. He ordered Apollonium, a captain of 22,000
men, to enter Jerusalem on the Sabbath in a parade of arms, killing
grown men who came out to see them, taking young men and women captive,
and selling them as slaves for money.”
At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but
it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. For the ships of Chittim
shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and
have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall
even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
“Returning to Egypt in the spring of 168 BC to besiege Alexandria and the
two young boy Egyptian kings, Antiochus IV was met by the Roman
ambassadors, Popilius Loena, C. Decimius, and C. Hostilius. Prior
to accepting a kiss on the hand from Antiochus IV, Popilius gave
written tables to Antiochus IV upon which the Roman Senate had issued
a decree of support for Egypt. Popilius drew a circle on the ground
around Antiochus IV, and directed him to immediately offer his decision
regarding his intentions toward the Egyptians, before leaving the
circle he was standing in. Shocked by the approach of Popilius,
Antiochus IV acknowledged the Roman demands and then he kissed the
hand of Popilius, with the agreement to retreat to Syria. Antiochus
IV returned to Syria, sulked at his treatment by the Romans, and
vented his anger on his subjects the Jews by setting up the worship
of heathen gods in all Judea, and, he killed those who would not
worship his gods.”
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary
of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall
place the abomination that maketh desolate.
“According to
1 Maccabees 1:44-57, Antiochus IV sent word to Jerusalem to
stop all burnt offerings and sacrifices. He ordered an end to circumcision,
burned the books of the Law, erected altars in the sacred precincts
of the temple of Jerusalem for the sacrifice of hogs and unclean
cattle, erected a dreadful desecration upon the altar in the temple
of Jerusalem, erected pagan altars in all Judean towns, and ended
the burning of incense. And, according to
2 Maccabees 6:2 - 6:6, the forces of Antiochus IV forbade Sabbath
worship, covered the altar of the temple in Jerusalem with abominable
offerings, amused themselves by lying with prostitutes in the sacred
precincts of the temple, and renamed the temple as Zeus Olympius.
The dreadful desecration, known as the abomination that causes desecration,
set up in the location of the altar in the temple of Jerusalem in
168 BC, was an altar and statue to the pagan god Jupiter (Zeus Olympius).”
1 Maccabees 1:44-57 For the
king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities
of Juda that they should follow the strange laws of the land, And
forbid burnt offerings, and sacrifice, and drink offerings, in the
temple; and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days:
And pollute the sanctuary and holy people: Set up altars, and groves,
and chapels of idols, and sacrifice swine’s flesh, and unclean
beasts: That they should also leave their children uncircumcised,
and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and
profanation: To the end they might forget the law, and change all
the ordinances. And whosoever would not do according to the commandment
of the king, he said, he should die. In the selfsame manner wrote
he to his whole kingdom, and appointed overseers over all the people,
commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice, city by city. Then many
of the people were gathered unto them, to wit every one that forsook
the law; and so they committed evils in the land; And drove the
Israelites into secret places, even wheresoever they could flee
for succour. Now the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred
forty and fifth year, they set up the abomination of desolation
upon the altar, and builded idol altars throughout the cities of
Juda on every side; And burnt incense at the doors of their houses,
and in the streets. And when they had rent in pieces the books of
the law which they found, they burnt them with fire. And whosoever
was found with any the book of the testament, or if any committed
to the law, the king’s commandment was, that they should put
him to death.
2 Maccabees 6:1-6
Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel
the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live
after the laws of God: And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem,
and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim,
of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt
in the place. The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous
to the people: For the temple was filled with riot and revelling
by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women
within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought
in things that were not lawful. The altar also was filled with profane
things, which the law forbiddeth. Neither was it lawful for a man
to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at
all to be a Jew.
And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries:
but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they
shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many
days.
“The Jews were forced underground in order to keep the Sabbath and Antiochus
IV openly rewarded apostate Jews with positions of responsibility.
In
2 Maccabees 6 & 7, the stories of the deaths of Eleazar,
a leading scribe, and a mother and her seven sons are told. Eleazar
set an example for others by refusing to eat pork and voluntarily
submitting to the torture wheel. The mother and her seven sons each
refused to submit and were skinned alive, dismembered, and boiled
in a hot pan. Despite attempts by Antiochus IV to convince the youngest
son with flattery and promised riches, the son set an example for
other youths to follow the laws of their fathers and forefathers,
even unto death.”
Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpenH5826
with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.
“Observing the cruelties of Antiochus IV, Judas, who was called Maccabeus,
and his followers secretly entered the villages of Judea and called
on their kinsmen to join them in revolt. By enlisting those who
had clung to the Jewish religion, they mustered 6,000 men, and were
joined by the Hasideans, who were war-like Israelite volunteers.
At the same time, Judas selected Eupolemus and Jason to go to the
Roman Senate as emissaries to request assistance. The Roman Senate
was sympathetic and sent brass tablets to Jerusalem with a written
testimony of Roman support for the Jews.”
And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge,
and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet
for a time appointed.
“The story of the death of the elderly scribe Eleazar in
2 Maccabees 6, is the most poignant story regarding the willingness
of the wise to stumble under the Law. Given the choice of violating
his conscience by eating pork to extend his natural life, or violating
Jewish law by submitting to obvious suicidal death, Eleazar went
straight to the torture wheel and ordered his oppressors to send
him down to Hades at once. As he was dying, he said, ‘The
Lord, in his holy knowledge, knows that, though I might have escaped
death, I endure dreadful pains in my body from being flogged; but
in my heart I am glad to suffer this, because I fear Him.’
Similarly, one of the seven tortured sons, at the point of death,
said to his oppressors, ‘Do not be falsely deceived; for
we suffer these things because of ourselves, for we sin against
our own God, so these amazing things have happened. But you must
not suppose that you will go unpunished for having attempted to
fight against our God.’”
Narrative Shift: Antiochus to Antichrist
I believe from verse 36 on, scripture is referring to the time of the
end yet future. Verse 35 places the timing “even
to the time of the end,” leading me to believe what follows
is at the time of the end, yet for a time appointed. Furthermore, Daniel
12 that follows goes on to describe in greater detail the time of the
abomination of desolation, tied also with Revelation 12:7-17 and
the restrainer of 2 Thessalonians 2.
I view
Antiochus IV Epiphanes as a foreshadow of the
man
of sin. Given the historical match that appears to exist, it’s
interesting that we seem to see a quick transition to the time of the end
if we follow the flow of the passage. Just as Daniel 8 details the rise
of Antiochus out of one of four kingdoms, here we’ve seen a more detailed
view of that political rise and the infighting between the king of the North
and South. It may be this transition also hints at some future political
events and battles that will be coming in the future. Continuing with Daniel
11:36...
Daniel 11:36-12:13 And the king
shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify
himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the
God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished:
for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the
God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for
he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour
the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour
with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he
shall acknowledge [and] increase with glory: and he shall cause them
to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
And at
the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the
king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots,
and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the
countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into
the glorious land, and many [countries] shall be overthrown: but these
shall escape out of his hand, [even] Edom, and Moab, and the chief of
the children of Ammon. He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the
countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have
power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious
things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians [shall be] at his
steps. But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble
him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly
to make away many.
And he shall plant the tabernacles of his
palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall
come to his end, and none shall help him. And at that time shall Michael
stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people:
and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there
was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall
be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And
many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to
everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt. And
they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and
they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even]
to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall
be increased. Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two,
the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that
side of the bank of the river. And [one] said to the man clothed in
linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river, How long [shall it
be to] the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen,
which [was] upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right
hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for
ever that [it shall be] for a time, times, and an half; and when he
shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all
these [things] shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not:
then said I, O my Lord, what [shall be] the end of these [things]? And
he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words [are] closed up and sealed
till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and
tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall
understand; but the wise shall understand. And from the time [that]
the daily [sacrifice] shall be taken away, and the abomination that
maketh desolate set up, [there shall be] a thousand two hundred and
ninety days. Blessed [is] he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand
three hundred and five and thirty days. But go thou thy way till the
end [be]: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the
days.
If you have not already, I would recommend reading Chris White’s
free book online
False Christ as it goes into this very well and specifically the
Wars of the Antichrist, which I agree the following passages speak of
up to the abomination of desolation yet future in Daniel 12:1. He also has

here that I
highly recommend.
Description of the Future Antichrist
I believe this is another description of the
abomination of desolation, when the man of sin doesn’t put up
an altar, but sits in the temple of God claiming to be God.
Daniel 11:36a And
the king shall do according to his will;
and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and
shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods,
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let
no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except
there come a falling away first, and that
man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that
is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing
himself that he is God.
He will be given power for 42 months, or 3 1/2 years until what has been
determined is done.
Daniel 11:36b and shall prosper
till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall
be done.
Revelation 13:5
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies;
and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months.
Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak
[great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of
the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be
given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Daniel 12:6-7 And [one] said
to the man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river,
How long [shall it be to] the end of these wonders? And I heard the
man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river, when
he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by
him that liveth for ever that [it shall be] for a time, times, and an
half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the
holy people, all these [things] shall be finished.
Verses 36-39 also gives us a list of characteristics of this king.
Exalts and magnifies himself above every god (Antiochus IV Epiphanes
did not do this)
Speaks marvellous things against the God of gods
He will prosper until the indignation is accomplished, what is determined
will be done
He will not regard or consider the God of his fathers or any god
He will not regard or consider the desire(H2532
- delight, desire) of women
He will not be influenced by sexual desire for women
He will not consider what women want, a kind of return to the
patriarchal traditions of womens roles
In his rule he will honor the God of forces(H4581
- strength, fortification, stronghold)
He will honor a god his fathers didn’t know with gold, silver,
precious stones, and pleasent things
He will accomplish his plans in the fortified stronghold with a
strange(H5236
- foreign, alien) god who he will acknowledge(H5234
- know, acknowledge, respect, discern) and increase(H7235
- multiply, become many) with glory(H3519
- glory, honor)
He will divide(H2505
- divide, flatter) the land for gain(H4242
- price)
The dividing of the land could be for the purpose of initial
peace (ie: the covenant with many for one week)
This could be flattery of the people with money, gifts, etc.
like Antiochus IV to gain followers
We see he declares himself above all gods and honors a foreign god of
strength that makes him strong. He honors this god whom he acknowledges
and respects and increases his glory. The idea of increasing his glory would
require observance of others to join in recognizing that glory, essentially
growing the followers of this foreign god who gives strength and power to
the king.
Revelation 13:2-8 And the beast
which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet]
of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and
the dragon gave him his power,
and his seat, and great authority. And
they worshipped the dragon
which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast,
saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies;
and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months. And
he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name,
and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And
it was given unto him to make
war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over
all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the
earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of
life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Wars of the Antichrist
Verse 40 again clarifies that this is at the time of the end, however
it still uses the term king of the South as it did previously for the battles
between the Ptolomaic Kingdom (South) and the Seleucid Empire (North). It
should be noted that the references to the king of the North and king of
the South were not single rulers as it occurred over a period of time through
successive rulers. Therefore in the same way we should interpret the king
of the South to be related to the old Ptolemaic Kingdom, modern Libya and
primarily Egypt.
Likewise the king of the North would represent the area of the Seleucid
Empire, considerably larger, but including parts of modern Turkey, Syria,
Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, and Pakistan. This king of the end times
is the king of the North and so we would expect that modern Egypt would
push at him.
In the paradigm of the
Jewish Antichrist, the king of the North, the man of sin, would be the
leader of Israel. In the wider scope of the politics of the end shown in
the
visions of Daniel and John, this leader would be part of a ten-nation
alliance. It would likely be this alliance that is part of the confirming
of the covenant with many for one week, the
70th week of Daniel. We also know that 3 leaders of the 10 nation alliance
are plucked up/fall before the little horn/leader that comes up from the
10 leaders.
Daniel 7:8, 20 I considered the
horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn,
before whom there were three
of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this
horn [were] eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
... And of the ten horns that [were] in his head, and [of] the other
which came up, and before whom
three fell; even [of] that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that
spake very great things, whose look [was] more stout than his fellows.
It seems as though something happens that causes Egypt to attack the
king of the North and he responds quickly and decisively, flowing through
the attackers like water and overthrowing many countries, Egypt explicitly
stated as not escaping. It also says that the Libyans and Ethiopians will
be at his steps(H4703
- in his footsteps/company). So perhaps these are also part of the 10 nation
alliance and they assist in going after Egypt or I’m misreading this
and they are about to be attacked next.
During this campaign, news from the Northeast cause him to quickly change
course and with great fury, destroy and utterly destroy many. Who is to
Egypt and Israel’s Northeast?
Isaiah 17:1-3, 9 The burden of
Damascus. Behold, Damascus
is taken away from [being] a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
The cities of Aroer [are] forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which
shall lie down, and none shall make [them] afraid. The fortress also
shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant
of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith
the LORD of hosts. ... In that day shall his
strong cities be as a forsaken
bough, and an uppermost branch, which
they left because of the children of Israel: and there
shall be desolation.
Damascus is the oldest continuously inhabited city and has never been
made a ruinous heap. However, this passage seems to prophecy its destruction
and strong cities being forsaken because of the children of Israel. I can’t
prove the relation obviously, but in my studies this came to remembrance
so I’m including it.
“Daniel 11:40 is the first verse in this section about the
wars of Antichrist:
At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him;
and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind,
with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter
the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.
The “king of the south” is a reference to Israel’s historic enemy,
Egypt, and has been used to refer to Egypt throughout the first part
of this chapter. This point is not contested by many; in fact, the word
“Egypt” even appears explicitly twice, a few verses later, in a passage
that speaks of the subjection of Egypt to the Antichrist:
He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the
land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall have power over the treasures
of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also
the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. (Daniel 11:42–43)
It is interesting to see that Egypt attacks the Antichrist first
(verse 40). And, even though Antichrist completely subdues Egypt, that
nation’s aggression toward him is worthy of noting, and will be important
when we study Islamic eschatology in later chapters.
Conservative expositors and scholars debate the identity of the “king
of the north,” another conquest of the Antichrist (verse 40). During
the Cold War, it was proposed that the king of the north was Russia.
However, that view seems to have been based more on the geopolitics
of the day rather than on any clue from the text itself. These days,
it is generally accepted that the king of the north represents the same
thing it has throughout the earlier portion of the chapter, which includes
parts of modern-day Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, and a few
others. For more on this, I recommend the excellent paper by Dr. J.
Paul Tanner, “Daniel’s ‘King of the North’: Do We Owe Russia an Apology?”
1 Dr. Tanner concludes his paper this way:
To be hermeneutically consistent, the “king of the North” ought
to be interpreted in light of the meaning the phrase has had throughout
the chapter…. I would like to submit that the “King of the North”
is a confederation of northern Arab nations that will attack the
Antichrist and his forces in this military conflict centered in
the Middle East.
2
So, to sum up the first part of this passage, the Antichrist is attacked
by Egypt and a northern coalition of Arab states. But, even though he
is attacked first, he completely crushes these historic enemies of Israel,
subdues them, and takes their resources.
A quick word on the idea that these are the “historic” enemies of
Israel: Not only are these two groups (Egypt and this cluster of Arab
countries) consistently “bad guys” in the Bible, they also are specifically
said to be destroyed and subdued by the Messiah during the Messianic
Age (Isaiah 11:16, 19:23–25, and 27:12–13; Micah 7:12; Zechariah 14:18–19).
This suggests that the Antichrist is attempting to fulfill these prophecies.
At the very least, it would be very tempting for a Jewish person to
believe that the person who finally destroys their incredibly antagonistic
neighbors and forces them to capitulate to Israel is at least a strong
candidate for the Messiah.
Why isn’t the fact that the Antichrist will destroy and subdue the
enemies of Israel talked about more in modern prophecy teaching? The
answer is that it doesn’t fit with most of the modern views of the Antichrist.
Why would the Antichrist—who, they think, is either a man of peace or
a Muslim—destroy the Muslim world? It doesn’t fit with many of the mainstream
views, so almost no one dwells on this passage.
The Antichrist Enters the Glorious Land
The next part of this prophecy gives even further proof that the
Antichrist is knowingly attempting to root out all the enemies of Israel
and fulfill specific prophecies about the Messiah (though many people
view the next few verses in exactly the opposite way): “He shall also
enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but
these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people
of Ammon” (Daniel 11:41).
Most commentaries I have read interpret this to mean that after the
Antichrist conquers Egypt and the other Arab countries, he enters Israel
to attack the Jews as well. However, not only does nothing in this text
suggest that he is attacking Jewish countries, but I believe the verse
explicitly says the exact opposite is happening. This verse indicates
that the Antichrist is entering Israel not to conquer the Jews, but
the parts of Israel that are held by Israel’s enemies. In other words,
after the Antichrist’s macro conquests of the main enemies of Israel
(Egypt, Iran, etc.), he then enters Israel to mop up the micro enemies
of Israel that are their immediate neighbors, like the Palestinians.
This is most evident by the fact that the three places mentioned
in verse 41, Edom, Moab, and Ammon (all of which are Arab nations today),
“escape” from the Antichrist’s hands. The only reason to describe these
enemies as “escaping” is to show that they were being pursued by the
Antichrist in the first place. These groups, too, are consistently mentioned
as being conquered in the Messianic Age. Also note that the passage
says that Antichrist enters the Glorious Land and overthrows “many countries”—a
phrase that certainly makes sense if he is attacking other non-Jewish
countries in and around Israel like Edom, Moab and Ammon.
Modern Israel holds a very small portion of the land as defined in
Genesis 15:18–21, or the land conquered by King David (see map). It
is of the utmost importance to realize that several prophecies in Scripture
say when the Messiah comes, He will conquer the whole land of Israel—including,
for example, the coastlands that are currently Palestinian-controlled
(such as Gaza).”
Leadup to/and the Abomination of Desolation
This portion of scripture focuses on the transition from the wars of
the antichrist to him actually becoming the antichrist, declaring himself
god and demanding worship, and the last 1290 days of the 70th
week of Daniel. It is also connected to Revelation 12 and there are actually
many similarities between the
visions given to Daniel and John prophetically.
The next two verses in Daniel 11 that we have been studying are extremely
important. Their significance has often been overlooked due to an unnecessary
chapter break between Daniel 11:45, the last verse in the chapter, and
Daniel 12:1:
Daniel 11:45: And he shall plant the tents of his palace
between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come
to his end, and no one will help him.
Daniel 12:1: At
that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands
watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time
of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to
that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered,
Every one who is found written in the book. (emphasis added)
In chapter 2, I alluded to my belief that these two verses show that
the Antichrist “coming to his end” must refer to his dying as a result
of the “mortal head wound” mentioned in several places (see Revelation
13:3, 12, and 14) from which he eventually recovers in what seems to
be a miraculous resurrection. In other words, I don’t believe that the
mention of the Antichrist coming to his end in Daniel 11:45 is speaking
of his final end at all. I stated that one of the reasons for believing
this is that the next verse, Daniel 12:1, starts with the words, “At
that time,” which chronologically connects the following events to the
previous verse. Daniel 12:1 continues by saying: “At that time Michael
shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons
of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never
was since there was a nation, Even to that time…”
This means the Antichrist coming to his end just after his conquest
of the enemies of Israel is directly followed by Michael “standing up”
and the beginning of “a time of trouble, Such as never was since there
was a nation, Even to that time.”
This chapter begins with a time of unparalleled trouble in all of history.
This is the “time of Jacob’s trouble” that Jeremiah and
Christ spoke of. We know they are connected because each one of them makes
the declaration that the time they are speaking of is so terrible that it
is unrepeated in all of history. Three scriptures laying claim to an unparalleled
time must connect all three of those times as the
same time. If you read the time of Jacob’s trouble Bible study, you
will see just how connected Jeremiah 30:4-7, Daniel 12:1, and Matthew 24:15-22
| Mark 13:14-20 are. Another important piece of information Daniel
12:1 reveals for us is the identity of the restrainer of 2 Thessalonians
2, Michael the archangel. So in the first verse of Daniel 12, we have an
order of events.
Michael stands up to go to heaven and cast Lucifer the dragon out.
Revelation 12:7-9
The restrainer stops restraining and antichrist is revealed.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
The dragon gives the beast his great power and authority. Revelation
13:2
The dragon comes to earth with great wrath because he knows
he has a short time and persecutes the woman Israel. Revelation
12:12-13
Time of unparalleled trouble, Jacob’s trouble, linked by Christ
to the abomination of desolation.
Israel is delivered out of this time. (Time cut short for the sake
of the elect, those written in the book.) Revelation 12:14-16, Jeremiah
30:4-7, Daniel 12:1, and Matthew 24:15-22, Mark 13:14-20
We also have more information about what makes the world wonder after
the beast at this time.
Revelation 13:3-5, 12 And
I saw one of his heads as it
were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the
world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon
which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying,
Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? ...
And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth
the earth and them which dwell therein to worship
the first beast, whose deadly
wound was healed.
2 Thessalonians
2:7-12 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only
he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way. And
then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with
the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his
coming: [Even him], whose coming is
after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish;
because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be
saved. And for this cause God
shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure
in unrighteousness.
The delusion God sends is to reinforce the deception the dragon is perpetuating
on the earth during this time of trial. Who will fall for the deception
and who will have relied on God’s Word to protect against deception?
Time of the Reign of the Beast and Wrath of the
Dragon
Daniel 12:6-7 And [one] said to
the man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river,
How long [shall it be to] the end of these wonders? And I heard the
man clothed in linen, which [was] upon the waters of the river, when
he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by
him that liveth for ever that [it shall be]
for a time, times, and an half;
and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy
people, all these [things] shall be finished.
Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak
great words against the most High, and
shall wear out the saints of
the most High, and think to change times and laws: and
they shall be given into his
hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Revelation 13:5 And there was
given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and
power was given unto him to
continue forty [and] two months.
Here we are given the timeframe that it is during the final 3½
years that the dragon will be given power scatter the power of the holy
people, those who keep the faith and do not worship the beast or take the
mark. This period starts at the man of sin’s reavealing at the abomination
of desolation, is given power by the dragon, and goes after Israel in Judea.
This is the start of the
hour of temptation that will come, to the Jew first and then upon the
whole world.
This is also the start of the dragon’s wrath and we know he will
only be stopped by Yeshua when He retruns in glory at Armageddon and casts
the beast and false prophet into the lake of fire and locks the dragon in
the bottomless pit for 1,000 years. Revelation 19:20-20:3 Therefore we know
that 3½ years, or 42 months after the abomination of desolation,
Christ will return to take the kingdoms.
There are two more time periods of exact days mentioned in this Daniel
12 in the last half of the chapter.
1,290 Days: The Scope of Daniel 12:11
Daniel 12:8-11 And I heard, but
I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what [shall be] the end of
these [things]? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for
the words [are] closed up and sealed
till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white,
and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked
shall understand; but the wise shall understand. And
from the time [that] the daily
[sacrifice] shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate
set up, [there shall be] a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
It must have been difficult for Daniel to have all these visions and
their interpretations yet not understand their meaning. He’s told
it’s for the time of the end, but also a quick sentence that covers
all of history to that point of the end. The good will be purified and tried
and the wicked will do their wickedness oblivious and unable to understand
God’s plans, but the wise will understand. John 15:15 I believe the
words are unsealed now as
I believe we are nearing
the end. We can understand a great deal more now and so our understanding
of the mysteries of God are more revealed than they were in Daniel’s
time before so much of our history had occurred.
I believe Daniel 12:11 is a pivotal point of understanding to see how
the
exact day prophecies of Daniel and John create the framework of the
70th Week of Daniel. However, while the 1,290
days specified have a beginning event, the
abomination of desolation, there is no ending event to say exactly what
this time frame contains. So can we determine from scripture what the scope
of this passage is? And what will that tell us about the future?
There are 1,290 days from the abomination
of desolation to when? We know
several things that must be taken into account with this verse.
The abomination of desolation is “in the midst” of the week according
to Daniel 9:27. 1,260 days is the exact middle of 2,520 days. (360 x
7)
The beast gets his power at the abomination of desolation. Revelation
12:13-17 | Revelation 13:2-4
The beast has this power for 42 months (1,260 days). Revelation
13:4-5
The beast’s power is taken away upon Christ’s return
in glory when he and the false prophet are thrown in the lake of fire.
Therefore, Christ returns in glory 1,260 days after the abomination
of desolation. Revelation 19:20
Daniel 12:1 starts the chapter at the abomination of desolation
and marks the beginning of the “time of Jacob’s trouble.”
Matthew 24:15-22 | Jeremiah 30:4-7
Israel is protected from the dragon for 1,260 days. Revelation 12:14
Taking into account those time frames listed above, in order for scripture
to not contradict itself, the 1,290 days must mark the time from the abomination
of desolation to the end of the week because the
dragon gets power for 1,260 daysandIsrael is protected from the dragon for 1,260 days.
We know that the dragon, through the beast, does get Israel for a short
time.
The only way to remedy this apparent contradiction is with the understanding
Daniel 12:11 brings, the abomination of desolation and stopping of the daily
sacrifice occurs 30 days before the exact middle. This leaves, at most,
30 days from the abomination of desolation for Israel to be attacked by
the dragon as prophesied, yet still be protected from him for 1,260 days
in the wilderness. In this way, the whole council of God is in agreement
and there are no contradictions. 2/3 of Israel is cut off and killed, Zechariah
13:8-9, and yet 1/3 remnant is still protected. Revelation 12:14 In the
Jewish Antichrist paradigm, the cutting off may be related to those individuals
choosing to be the unfaithful harlot that worships the beast vs. the faithful
Israel that flees the beast. Romans 11
Since Israel’s protection began after the start of the reign of
the man of sin and extends for 1,260 days, Israel will remain in the wilderness
for a short time of around 30 days after Christ has defeated the armies
at His return. Since the 70th week of Daniel revolves
around God dealing with Israel, it cannot be over until the decreed times
are completed meaning that the 1,290 days that begins at the abomination
of desolation ends marking the end of the 70th
week of Daniel and the completion of God’s redemption as Israel is
brought out of the wilderness.
Different Periods in Daniel 12
The great tribulation Christ spoke of in Matthew 24:15-22 ends 1,260
days before the end of the 70th week because it
is specifically for Israel and Israel is protected for the final 1260 days
of the 70th week. Revelation 12:14
Daniel 12:6-7 presents a question/answer:
Question: “How long shall it be
to the end of these wonders?” Answer: “...it
shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished
to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.”
The power of the holy people is scattered within 1,260 days. (Daniel
7:25) This is the same time period of the antichrists reign before Christ’s
return in glory. From the AoD to Christ’s return, the power of the
holy people will be scattered. The antichrist is given power over everyone
on the earth who isn’t
taken
before God’s wrath.
Daniel 12:8-11 Question: “And
I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the
end of these things?” Answer: “And
from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination
that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety
days.” From the AoD to the end is 1290 days. The question
is about the end of these things and the answer is given in the number of
days from the AoD. That means the end is 1290 days after the AoD. This is
not centered on the scattering of the holy people, but an event in which
the antichrist reveals himself. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 When does this time
period end? 1290 days after the AoD.
There are two time periods with different subjects attached to them.
Daniel 9:24 gives us the scope of the 70 weeks prophecy. In that time, one
of the conditions to the completion of the 70th
week is “to seal up the vision and prophecy.” This means the
fulfillment of Bible prophecy in Christ’s return, the resurrection
of Revelation 20:4-5 and the sealing of Satan for the millennium. If this
is sealing up the vision and prophecy and finishing the 70th
week, then the end of the wonders in Daniel 12 would be that same finishing
point when prophecy is sealed up, completed.
I also believe that verse 13, “But go
thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot
at the end of the days.” may suggest the resurrection of Revelation
20:4-5 when all the dead in Christ who were not caught up will be resurrected
and standing in their lot. I believe the
first resurrection of Revelation 20:4-5 may be the last day of the 70th
week. The transition of God dealing with Israel as a nation will end at
the point when all true Israel is resurrected and alive for the Messianic
Kingdom.
I also think this may be a very Jewish promise to “stand in thy
lot” since Israel was promised the Promised Land and during the Messianic
Kingdom, that promise will be fulfilled completely. The bride of Christ
and Gentiles in general aren’t promised earthly land as Israel. I
think the Bible is pretty clear on this and when taken into account with
everything else, it still fits. Rather than having no framework defining
the end of the 1,290 day period, I believe the end-time is marked by the
subject of the whole last days, the 70th week of
Daniel. That’s when I believe the 1,290 days ends.
The Cutting Short
To make one final point on this period, I just want to clarify that this
unparalleled time in all three cases mentions that time being cut short.
Since the dragon is given power for 3½ years, we know this is not
the time considered to be cut short.
Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall
Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of
thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was
since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and
at that time thy people shall
be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Jeremiah 30:7 Alas! for that
day [is] great, so that none [is] like it: it [is] even the time of
Jacob’s trouble; but
he shall be saved out of it.
Matthew 24:22 And except those
days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved:
but for the elect’s sake
those days shall be shortened.
Mark 13:20 And except that the
Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved:
but for the elect’s sake,
whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
Revelation 12: 14-16 (Great Tribulation
Phase 1) And to the woman were given two wings of a great
eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where
she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face
of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood
after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and
swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
Revelation 12: 17 (Great Tribulation
Phase 2) And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went
to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments
of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
What this tells us that it is not the time of the dragon’s wrath,
the great tribulation, that will be shortened from 3½ years. It is
the time of Jacob’s trouble that will be shortened, the time the dragon
is going after Israel in Judea just after the abomination of desolation
at his revealing. This is phase 1 of the time of great tribulation.
Phase 2 is that time after Israel is taken from Judea and protected in
the wilderness from the dragon. This is the great tribulation that the church
of Thyatira is thrown into. Revelation 2:22 The final 1,230 days of the
antichrist’s rule is the great tribulation for those who weren’t
protected in the wilderness who are Jewish and those who hold the testimony
of Christ. Only then does he spend the rest of his 3½ years going
after Jews and Christians globally. And since his time and Israel’s
protection from him are both 1,260 days that must exist in a 1,290 day box,
it follows that phase 1 would only be about 30 days long. This is when I
believe Yeshua
comes for His bride and seals the
144,000
in the wilderness before the
wrath of God begins.
1,335 Days: Blessed are Those Who Wait
Daniel 12:12 Blessed [is] he that
waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty
days.
This gives an additional 45 day period after the 1,290 days attached
with a blessing. I believe that is the
marriage supper of the Lamb, Revelation 19:9, where God presents His
bride to the guests. Read the study on the
ancient Jewish wedding tradition and see how that lines up with Matthew
25:1-13. This timing would be 45 days after the end of the 70th
week, providing time for the newly resurrected from Revelation 20:4-5 to
attend the marriage supper of the Lamb and meet the bride of Christ when
she is presented there according to tradition.
Knowing the facts from scripture above and understanding the abomination
of desolation is in the midst of the week, I believe the timeframe is from
the abomination of desolation to the end of the 70th
week as Daniel 12:11 lays out:
The Last Resurrection
This is opposed to the
first resurrection. Here Daniel’s vision seems to jump to the
end of the Messianic Kingdom 1,000 years later as we see both the righteous
and unrighteous being resurrected.
Daniel 12:2-3 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the
earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame
and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness
of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars
for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:4-5
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto
them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness
of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the
beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their
foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ
a thousand years. But the rest
of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished.
This [is] the first resurrection.
Daniel 11:37-38 cannot refer to Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The
two verses indicate that the individual in view will not show favor
to any gods and will honor a god of fortress who was not worshipped
by his ancestors. Antiochus IV does not fit either of these descriptions,
particularly in his religious gifts to the Greek cities. The balance
of evidence favors the fifth view that holds Daniel 11:36-45 is
a prophecy to be fulfilled by a future king.
“Be not overcome
of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
