Israeli security officials are keeping a wary eye on a continuing buildup of Hizbullah militia forces in southern Lebanon. Military analysts say that the Iranian and Syrian-backed Shiite Lebanese group has moved around 20,000 men into new positions throughout the area. They add that at least one hundred and sixty Hizbullah outposts have been established in recent months, mostly in Shiite towns and villages located in all sections of southern Lebanon.
One such position, in the town of El Khaim just north of the Israeli upper Galilee border with Lebanon, was recently featured in Israeli television news reports about the ongoing Hizbullah buildup. Israeli drone surveillance aircraft pictures taken in the skies above the Shiite town clearly showed Hizbullah military activity going on inside El Khaims municipal boundaries. Security officials point out that the worrisome military buildup is a flagrant violation of United Nations resolution 1701 that ended the 2006 summertime war between Israeli and Hizbullah forces. The resolution called for Hizbullah militia forces to remain well clear of the border area. They add that UN peacekeeping troops have failed to enforce the ban.
